Behind the Label: When the Application Gets Difficult, John Signet Gets Involved
Most label problems don’t start with the label.
They start with something that changed around it.
A colder application temperature. A different container surface. Moisture. A chemical washdown. A new printer or ribbon. A faster production line.
That’s why solving a difficult labeling application often requires looking well beyond facestock and adhesive.
At ID Images, that’s where John Signet, Technical Solutions Manager, comes in.
John is one of the label industry’s most experienced technical resources, bringing decades of knowledge across labels, adhesives, thermal transfer ribbons, inks, coatings, printing technologies and real-world application environments.
And his role is unusual.
While many label converters rely primarily on suppliers or sales teams for technical support, ID Images has invested in having this level of technical expertise directly available to our customers. John travels throughout North America and beyond, visiting customer facilities, studying applications firsthand and solving labeling challenges where the answer isn’t obvious.
The Label Is Only One Part of the System
One of the most important things John helps customers understand is that label performance is a system, not a single product specification.
A pressure-sensitive label can involve many interacting variables:
- Surface material and surface energy
- Application and service temperature
- Moisture, condensation and humidity
- Exposure to chemicals, oils or cleaning agents
- Facestock, adhesive and liner construction
- Print technology and ribbon compatibility
- Barcoding and scanning requirements
- Application speed, pressure and dwell time
Change one variable and the outcome can change dramatically.
That’s why asking, “What adhesive should we use?” often isn’t the best place to start.
A better question is:
“What does this label need to survive from the moment it is printed until the end of its useful life?”
That shift in thinking can prevent costly problems later.
Finding the Problem Behind the Problem
When a label curls, lifts, falls off or becomes unreadable, replacing it with a “stronger” material may seem like the obvious solution.
But the root cause could be temperature, surface contamination, container material, a ribbon and topcoat combination, or something happening elsewhere in the production process.
John helps uncover those variables.
He works alongside customers, sales teams, operations and material suppliers to understand why something is happening before recommending what should change.
Often, the best way to do that is on the production floor.
John travels extensively to customer facilities to see how labels are being printed, handled and applied. Those observations can reveal details that are difficult to capture on a specification sheet but can completely change the recommended solution.
For our customers, it means they aren’t expected to become adhesive chemists, materials scientists or printing experts themselves.
They have one on their team.
Expertise the Label Industry Relies On
John’s expertise isn’t recognized only within ID Images.
He serves as Co-Chair of the TLMI Technical Committee, helping lead one of the label industry’s key forums for technical education, collaboration and problem-solving.
TLMI brings together leading label converters, material suppliers and technology partners from across the industry. Through its Technical Committee, members collaborate on emerging technologies, material developments, production challenges, regulatory considerations and evolving best practices.
As Co-Chair, John helps lead those conversations.
That distinction matters. Other converters, suppliers and technical professionals rely on the committee’s collective expertise to better understand some of the industry’s most complex and rapidly changing technical issues.
John isn’t simply staying current with where the label industry is going. He is helping lead the technical conversation around where it goes next.
For ID Images customers, that creates a real advantage. The knowledge being shared and developed across the industry can be translated into practical solutions for their own labeling operations.
Experience Across the Labeling System
John’s perspective comes from years of experience across multiple areas of the label and printing industry.
Before becoming Technical Solutions Manager at ID Images, John managed the company’s thermal ribbon operations and held product and marketing management positions within the inks and coatings side of the industry.
That breadth matters because labels don’t operate independently from printers, ribbons, coatings, adhesives or production environments. John evaluates the application as a complete system rather than looking at one component in isolation.
Bring Technical Expertise In Early
Perhaps the biggest lesson from John’s work is that technical expertise is most valuable before something fails.
“The best time to solve a technical label problem is before it becomes a problem. Asking the right questions at the beginning can prevent downtime, waste and costly changes later.”
- John Signet, Technical Solutions Manager, ID Images
For a challenging new application, involving John early can help customers ask questions they might not otherwise consider:
What will this label experience six months from now?
Could temperatures vary seasonally?
Will the container or surface ever change?
Does the label need to survive moisture, chemicals, abrasion, refrigeration or extreme temperatures?
Could another construction improve both performance and efficiency?
Those conversations can turn label selection from a purchasing decision into a better-informed technical decision.
You’re Not Just Buying a Label. You’re Building a Solution.
The customer knows their operation better than anyone.
Our job is to bring the technical knowledge that helps them identify risks earlier, ask better questions and make better decisions.
That’s why ID Images has invested in a dedicated technical leadership position like John’s, something relatively few label converters can offer at this level.
When an application gets complicated, John can step in, investigate the challenge and help customers understand what is really happening before identifying the right solution.
And when the broader label industry is looking for technical leadership, John is helping lead those conversations too.
